Purpose : This study was done to identify the correlations between spiritual well-being, physical function and health promoting behaviors and to identify the effects of the two variables on health promoting behavior.
Method : The participants were 102 older people who were living at home. Choi and Kim¢¥s Health Promoting Behavior Scale, Paloutzian and Ellison¢¥s Spiritual Well-being Scale and Marhoney and Barthel¢¥s Physical Function Scale were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Scheffe. ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression.
Results : 1) The score on the health promoting behavior scale ranged from 90 to 177 with a mean of 136.3 (2.90): spiritual well being scale ranged from 29 to 116 with a mean of 79.8 (3.99)¢¥, physical function scale ranged from 29 to 60 with a mean of 54 (3.60). 2) In the relationship between demographic characteristics and health promoting behaviors, there were significant differences for religion, number of times participated in religious ceremonies, physical condition and housing. 3) Spiritual well-being(r = .506, p < .05) and physical function (r =.411, p < .05) had a positive effect on health promoting behavior in elderly people. 4) Spiritual well-being (25.6%) and physical function (11%) had a significant effect on health promoting behavior.
Conclusion : Considering that spiritual well-being and physical function contributed significantly to health promoting behavior in the elderly people, nurses should give attention to and encourage religious life as a way of promoting health in elderly people.
